sketchbook no.10

I took a much needed “time out” this past weekend, and visited the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM), which is exactly what it’s called- a museum full of musical instruments. It’s really crazy though- the guy behind it is the owner of Target, so the whole building is kind of a poshed up version of the big box store, with an endless collection of musical instruments, arranged mostly, by country. It’s a good lesson in Geography- because there are maps indicating where each country is located, and also a bit of history, and wireless music that streams through the headphones as you near each particular display.

I think the most interesting thing about the sound is actually an unintended spatial effect- if you just wander around instead of studying each exhibit, you just catch fragments of music as you pass closely by displays fading in and out…

Anyway, about the sketches below- I’m working on a little project with a friend, and I needed to get some ideas for orchestral instruments. It’s fine to look at books and find images off the internet, but there’s something really nice about being able to see and sketch the actual instruments in person! I’m posting just a few right now, and will add some more in an upcoming post.
